The truth about the “5G revolution” everything about 5G communication and the US-China digital cold war

Photo of The truth about the “5G revolution” everything about 5G communication and the US-China digital cold war

The mobile phones we are currently using are 4G standard, but it seems that development of the next version, 5G, is progressing. When a few years have passed since I became a member of society, mobile phones that had been bought with the president's approval until then began to be distributed one by one in a blink of an eye, and will there be 10 or more mobile phones (smartphones) owned by individuals?

At first, it was just a phone call, but now it is possible to send messages, still images and videos can also be sent, and since it became a smartphone, it felt like it had just become a portable computer, and I feel that my lifestyle completely changed. I don't need to memorize many things anymore, I don't get lost, I don't have to worry about meeting people, and it's now very convenient.

It is written in this book that 5G will be a revolution. Looking back over the past 30 years, that alone seemed like a revolution to me, but it seems like it's evolving further. By switching to 5G, it seems that there are not only positive aspects but also points to worry about, but I want to keep up well with technological progress.

Below are the points I was concerned about.

・Zero-client smartphones, data center controlled autonomous driving, and telemedicine also require “real time” as a premise. This real time indicates 100 ms or less. 5G, which enables high-capacity data communication with ultra-low latency, is about to change the very structure of society (p17)

・The last mile of making factories smarter is completely wireless within the factory. Instead of Wifi, the characteristics of 5G such as large capacity communication, simultaneous multiple connections, and ultra-low latency come to life. This is not an individual user, but something that the manufacturing industry and automobile industry are looking for (p27, 35)

・The reason why 10 gigabit high-capacity communication was not possible was that the 2.4G hertz band frequency band used in smartphones etc. was crowded, and 10 gigabits worth of information could not be embedded (p40)

・The Army and Navy are broadly divided into land base stations and satellite ground stations, sea submarine cables, and air communication satellites (p60)

・The year after 1870, when telephone technology was established, undersea cables were laid between Nagasaki and Shanghai, and between Nagasaki and Vladivostok, and Japan also began connecting with overseas countries in the world of communication. Telephone service 10 years later (p61)

・Since the Chinese Communist Party is not a salaried society, it is a world where the concept of succession and the existence of contracts does not apply at all (p71)

・Since Huawei uses backdoor technology for communication devices developed by the US government, it cannot be said that it “prohibits communication espionage using backdoors.” (p80)

・In China, it may be thought that all conversations are eavesdropped and recorded by communication spies, but it is physically difficult in terms of memory and power consumption. (p85)

・What supported the growth of Apple to which Steve Jobs returned was Honghai, which is Huawei's EMS factory (p94)

・No matter how much computer security is enhanced, it is equal to defenseless if a back door is built into the 5G communication infrastructure itself (p101)

・The Chinese Communist Party not only acquired a display company called Sharp through Honghai, but also transferred Japan's 8K camera display technology. In 2018/11, it was decided to spend several trillion yen to build a large display factory in China, and it is said that if this starts operation, Japanese and Korean display makers will definitely go bankrupt (p104)

・What used to be a dispute over petroleum has now been replaced by a dispute over “personal information” and “automobile rights.” Takata went bankrupt and was taken to China, and the CEOs of VW and Audi have been prosecuted (p141)

・Solar panels are something that cannot be produced without consuming several years' worth of electricity that the panel can generate, the national burden of solar energy costs is 2.4 trillion yen per year, and considering energy conversion losses at power plants and power transmission losses, gasoline cars are more eco-friendly (p145)

・Electrolytes used in lithium-ion batteries are flammable, so when an EV car shorts and catches fire, which burns or explodes due to overcharging, it burns even though it is soaked in water (p147)

・If the vehicle body of an EV car is severely damaged, there is a risk of electric leakage and electric shock, so there is an indication that the driver or passenger must not be rescued (p148)

・EV cars are full of advantages when it comes to being eco-friendly, 1) EV cars are easier to copy than gasoline cars, 2) Chinese nuclear power plants sell, 3) EV cars can be connected via 5G to monitor vehicles (p149)

・Toyota is calling for full electrification by 2025, and it is an excellent strategy that Toyota started a joint venture with Panasonic (p149), which is an all-solid-state battery with a fixed electrolyte solution rather than using an electrolyte solution (p149)

・The reason why Toyota is trying to team up with SoftBank is that they have teamed up with telecommunications carriers with deep ties to China and can't miss the MAAS era, so this happened in the mobile phone industry in the past. Cell phone manufacturers have taken the leading role, and Toyota predicts that the past of becoming smartphone parts manufacturers will be repeated in the automobile industry (p150)

・For automobile manufacturers, the biggest customers in the ride-hailing system era that arranged autonomous vehicles were “ride-hailing platform companies,” and then the same phenomenon as computer manufacturers becoming slaves to platform companies due to the rise of GAFA appears. Under the condition that large lots are purchased per year, the cost of all parts is calculated at the lowest price, and profit is insignificant. This is the reason why hardware manufacturers declined and were acquired by Chinese companies (p153)

・In the future, the economic and business world will also be divided in half, and it will be difficult to make a two-pronged transaction between the United States and China as until now. At least, it is required to refrain from joint research and development related to communication. Currently, use prohibited in the US is Huawei, Hikvision, Dahua, and Hytera, but there is room for expansion of the scope (p164)

・China lost the ability to invite foreign-affiliated companies as manufacturing plants due to high tariffs imposed on the United States, and so did South Korea. As a result, foreign companies are moving towards factory construction in Japan where corporate taxes are high and wages are not low (p177)
